The National Union of Teachers have said it will embark on mother of all strikes nationwide if the proposed scrapping of state joint local government account and local council autonomy on Primary schools is included in the on-going constitutional amendment.

Comrade Michael Olukoya, the National President of the Nut made this statement while addressing newsmen after the National Executive Council Meeting of the Union in Abuja.

He said, “The moment the constitutional amendment process is concluded against the wishes of the Nigerian teachers, we shall direct all schools in Nigeria to remain closed, the mother of all strikes shall commence; because we have a responsibility to protect and defend our members.”

He recalled the near total collapse of the primary education between 1990 and 1994 when the schools were under the control of the Local governments, the local governments couldn’t pay the salaries of the teachers.

He emphasised that giving the local government autonomy over primary education would result in non-payment of teachers’ salaries and non-payment of pension funds and this would be detrimental to primary education all over the country.
