Senator Dino Melaye (APC – Kogi West) has pleaded with Catholic bishops and other Christians in the country to forgive his state governor, Yahaya Bello, saying the governor is suffering verbal diarrhoea.

Bello had allegedly insulted the Catholic bishops on Friday after they had a Thursday meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari during which they told the president that his goodwill among Nigerians was fast being “depleted”.

But reacting to the Catholic bishops’ views after Jum’at prayers at the Presidential Villa on Friday, Bello had told journalists that only corrupt politicians were angry with the president.

In a statement on Saturday, Melaye said the governor was suffering from ” verbal diarrhoea” and would be removed at the next election.

He said, “I apologise to the Catholic Church and the Christian community for the verbal diarrhoea of the Governor of Kogi State.

“It is more obvious than ever that he needs some ‘equational’ balances at his end. This affliction on Nigeria shall not arise a second time.”

However, the governor denied disparaging the Catholic bishops, saying he has utmost respect for their contributions to education and literacy in the country.

In a Saturday statement through his media aide, Kingsley Fanwo, Bello said his detractors deliberately misconstrued his statement in a bid to portray him as an irresponsible leader.

He said he would never disrespect any religious organisation in the country.
