22 killed in fresh bandit attack in Zamfara

Armed bandits numbering over 100 on Tuesday night invaded a village in Zamfara State, killing 22 people.

The incident occurred in Tungar Kwana village in Talata-mafara Local Government Area of the state.

An indigene, Mallam Ahmed Mohammed disclosed that the attackers invaded the village at 11pm as many villagers slept.

According to him, the bandits shot everyone in sight, leaving 22 persons including women and children dead.

Mohammed explained that many persons escaped into the forest to avoid being killed.

He added that many others injured in the attack were currently being treated in the hospital.

He further disclosed that the bandits carted away several cows, sheep and goats as well as foodstuffs.

Mohammed noted that the villagers have deserted the village for fear of a second wave of attacks.

The Zamfara State Police Command confirmed the incident.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Mohammed Shehu, however said that 20, and not 22, died in the attack.

“The villagers give the security agents useful information about some bandits who rustled cows last week and the information had assisted greatly in locating and killing many of them. Since that time, the bandits were targeting the villagers in order to avenge the killing of their people,” the police spokesman said.
