Rev. fr. Gabriel Osu, the Director of Social Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, societal decadence on parents’ failure to play their roles diligently.
Osu said this at his 35th priesthood ordination anniversary and book launch at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Lekki, Lagos.
“The society became bad because those responsible failed to play their part well.
“A society where things are not working as they should have is simply because the various parts are not functioning adequately.’’
He called for positive attitudinal change on the part of leaders and citizens to promote good, corporate governance in Nigeria.
In his book titled “Springboard to Salvation’’, Osu focused on the state of the nation, beginning with Nigeria at 53 years of independence.
He recounted the decadence the Nigerian family unit had fallen into through the stories of Daniel Oikhena, the stowaway kid.
Osu also highlighted the waste of human lives through the plight of Ese, the underage girl, who was kidnapped and sexually abused.
“We are not equipping our children with the skills they need in order to engage with the future because we are failing in those two critical areas.
“Our children can’t connect with the future; they are caught up trying to survive. This is a call especially for adults to rise up and stop being selfish and self-centred.
“You have already lived your life; what else are you looking for? Invest the remainder of your life in the youths and give them a future.
“Give them the skills they need and when they succeed, our joy will be full.’’
The cleric urged youths to remain committed and dedicated to hard work and avoid being lured into unwholesome activities.
He said that the progress and success of a nation depended on the level of hard work on the part of its citizens.
He, therefore, advised Nigerians, irrespective of religion, to work together for peace and stability in the nation. (NAN)
