The House Committee on Public Accounts has uncovered the mysterious disappearance of N19.7 billion Police Equipment Fund meant for the acquisition of a helicopter and other equipment.

The Chairman of the House Committee, Adeola Olamilekan discovered that the money had vanished as the CBN under Mallam Lamido Sanusi reportedly paid the sum, but neither the Nigerian Police Force or the Ministry of Police Affairs seem to know where the funds seem to have developed wings to.

The Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar, represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Air Wing, Mr. Ilesanmi Aguda, declared “no knowledge” when being interviewed by the House committee. The ministry of police affairs also denied knowledge of the funds.

The chairman of the REPS committee ruled, “If the IG  and the police ministry deny receipt of the said N19.7bn, then the committee can rightly assume that the money is missing, until proven otherwise.

“All the major actors involved in the alleged transaction, including the CBN have a case to answer.”

He also said the suspended Governor of the CBN, Mallam Lamido Sanusi and IGP would be asked to appear before the committee in an upcoming sitting.
