New Police Inspector General, Adamu Mohammed

With rumours heating up that Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, will be stepping down from his role due to age, it seems his successor will be Adamu Mohammed, a former CP in Enugu State.

This report comes via TheCable, who report that a source claimed that the announcement is imminent.

Mohammed has had an illustrious career in the force and was picked from the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos.

The alleged acting IG of Police was also deputy commissioner of police in Ekiti state before finally rising to the post of Assistant Inspector General.

Ibrahim Idris has served 35 in the Force and is by law supposed to retire, however, there were moves being made to extend his tenure, with reports even indicating that President Buhari asked the attorney-general of the federation, Abubakar Malami, for a Legal opinion on the matter.

The idea of the elongation of Idris’ term has been severely kicked against by the PDP who feel it is yet another way that the ruling party wants to amass power and oppress Nigerians.

According to a source for TheCable, “The president has asked Malami for a legal opinion on the tenure extension. He does not want to take any decision that will be upturned by the courts,”
