A human rights lawyer, Abdul Mahmud, has regained his freedom hours after he was arrested in his home by police in Mararaba area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Mahmud confirmed his release in a tweet on Tuesday evening.

In an earlier tweet, the lawyer and socio-political commentator said he was picked up in his home on Tuesday by a police team led by one Inspector Sola Olalekan after he defended ordinary citizens allegedly being intimidated by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Zara Muhammed in Karu area on Sunday.

“Police have taken the intimidation of citizens too far. Because I defended ordinary citizens intimidated by ACP Zara Muhammed on Sunday in Karu, officers led by Insp Sola Olalekan have arrested me in my own home. Headed to the station at Abacha Road, Mararaba @policeng,” the tweet read.

Confirming his release hours later, Mahmud tweeted, “The Great Oracle is back to the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine. A formal statement will be issued in due course. Thanks to all people of conscience for defending freedom. Greetings from the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine.”
