Arsonists Set 75-year-old Woman, Others ablaze In Kogi

A 75-year-old woman in Kogi State named Mallama Meimunat Opaluwa Sani was set on fire with her daughter and granddaughter by some yet-to-be-identified arsonists.

The assault happened at her Oketekwe home in the State’s Idah Local Government Area early on Thursday morning.

The Herald gathered that the terrible event also claimed the lives of her first daughter, Hajarat Usman Sani, and her five-year-old granddaughter, Onechojo, who both perished in the fire.

A family source who preferred not to be named because he was not authorized to speak said, “A group of people came to the house with petrol while our grandmother was sleeping alongside her daughter and granddaughter. They poured the petrol on the house and ignited a fire.

“The five-year-old granddaughter, Mama, died immediately after suffering severe burns, while Mallama Meimunat Opaluwa Sani, along with her daughter, was rushed to an undisclosed hospital. Mallama later succumbed to her injuries in the hospital, while her daughter was still fighting for her life.”

In 2023, the title of Akwuma Attah Igala was bestowed upon the late Mallama Meimunat Opaluwa Sani.

In the meantime, the five-year-old daughter and the late Mallama Meimunat Opaluwa Sani’s bones have been interred by Islamic customs.

Upon being approached, SP William Ovye Aya, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, indicated that the Police had not yet received any information regarding the incident.

As soon as the command received information about the incident, he pledged to get back to correspondents.
