President Muhammadu Buhari has summoned the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, over the New Year’s Day killing of over 50 people in Benue State by men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

The police boss appeared before the president for a closed-door meeting on Friday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Addressing State House correspondents after the meeting, Idris described the killing as communal, adding that the police had put measures in place to prevent a recurrence.

He said that contrary to insinuations in many quarters, the police was aware of its responsibilities and was neither overwhelmed nor understaffed.

The IG said he had already assured Governor Samuel Ortom that the incident would not repeat itself as the police was on its toes to ensure it does not.

He urged Nigerians to continue to support the police to perform its statutory responsibility of security of lives and properties all over the country.
