A corruption survey carried out by National Bureau of Statistics has showed that civil servants collected bribes from 60 million Nigerians in 2019.
Nigerian Government partnered with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Abu Dhabi, UAE to conduct a corruption survey on Nigerian citizens.
No fewer than 30 percent of Nigeria’s population were found guilty of giving or receiving bribe in 2019, as reported in the survey.
The survey also showed that civil servants are the major culprits of collecting bribes from clients, customers and contractors in order to favour their work or contracts.
Dr. Yemi Kale, Statician-General of the National Bureau of Statistics stated that 30 percent of Nigerians who came in contact with civil servants in 2019, paid unsolicited bribes to win favours or were compelled to pay bribes by the government officials.

According to the survey, the overall proportion of Nigerians who made contact with civil servants in the last 12 months, has increased at an exponential rate, thereby increasing the rate at which citizens gave and received bribes.
This is a major contributing factor why Nigeria ranks high among world’s most corrupt countries.
