Comedian Destalker Shares Story of Battling Depression

In a deeply personal interview on the Afrobeats Podcast, popular Nigerian comedian Destalker, real name Oghenekowhoyan Onaibe Desmond, opened up about his past struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts.

Destalker, known for his comedic wit, shared the emotional challenges he faced after graduating with a degree in Public Administration but being unable to find his desired career path. “I graduated with a degree, but couldn’t get a job,” he revealed. “So I started riding okada [commercial motorcycle] to make ends meet.

He went on to describe the frustration of his situation, stating, “I had it in my mind that I didn’t want to work for anyone. But the truth is, the job market has its own plans sometimes.” The combined pressure to support himself, coupled with a lack of career prospects and even frustrations from family members, ultimately led him into a deep depression.

It wasn’t easy,” Destalker confessed. “There were a lot of challenges, and it got to a point where I was suicidal. I attempted suicide three times. No one knew this part of my story.

However, amidst the darkness, Destalker found a spark of hope. “That’s when I realized even I can’t take my own life,” he shared. “I came to believe that even when you’re at your lowest, your miracle might be just around the corner. The closer you are to your destiny, the harder the challenges might be, but giving up shouldn’t be an option.
