More African countries have recorded their index cases of the Coronavirus on Monday as the infection spreads across the globe.

This has led to border restrictions against heavily infected countries by about 27 infected African countries including Ghana, Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia amid fears the virus could cripple their fragile health systems.

The new cases which have occured in Tanzania, Somalia, Liberia and the Republic of Benin brings the number of African countries with the virus to 30 with about 400 persons infected on the Continent.

Somalia which has been at war since 1991 and completely reliant on foreign aid to support its super fragile health system has four suspected cases although only one tested positive to the Coronavirus.

The four suspected persons returned from China last week according to Somali Minister for Health, Fawziya Abikar Nur.

This has led to the suspension of international flights to Somalia for the next two weeks to check the rate of infection in the country.

Liberia, nearly devastated by the Ebola epidemic of 2014 which depleted most of its healthcare resources announced its first case of the Coronavirus on Monday.

A more politically stable Benin Republic also announced its first case on Monday.

According to the health ministry, a citizen of the tiny west African country was being quarantined after returning from Belgium via Burkina Faso on March 11.

Tanzania’s health ministry also announced its first confirmed case on Monday.

A Tanzanian woman who had toured Denmark, Sweden and Belgium brought the virus into the country.

As these countries announced index cases, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia and Cameroon all reported additional cases with South Africa saying it lacked adequate funds to combat the spread of the disease in the country.
