The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hammed Ali (rtd), has directed all the men and officers of the service to declare their assets within 14 days or face the music.
This directive was conveyed in a circular personally signed by Ali and addressed to all Deputy Comptrollers-General, zonal coordinators and customs area controllers.
The move to ensure that the personnel of the service declare their assets is believed to be aimed at promoting a culture of transparency and accountability.
According to the circular, the directive was in line with “The Bank Employees Declaration of Assets Act Cap B1 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”
While the act is expressly directed at bank employees, it empowers the president to expand its application to extend to other categories of people.
In the circular, Ali observed that many of the personnel of the service had failed in times past to comply with directives to declare their asset, but stated that the practice would no longer be permitted.
