“We mourn the 29 Kenyans who have lost their lives in Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot.

“My administration continues to make every effort to support affected families and communities across the country,” President Uhuru said in a televised address to the nation.

Both communities are in Kenya’s Rift Valley.

With heavy rain continuing to fall, it was unclear if the death toll would still rise.

Although the rainy season started late this year, it has lasted for an exceptionally long period.

“Our long rains are here, we are grateful for the blessings.

“However, the heavy rains in many parts of our country have also, unfortunately, led to flooding and landslides and, in some cases, loss of life and destruction of property,” Kenyatta said.
