Disney Characters Used in Rape Awareness Posters

1 Min Read

An artist came up with a way to use familiar Disney characters in a startling new way, all in an effort to promote rape awareness.

“Princest Diaries,” a series of posters by artist Saint Hoax, is “an awareness campaign targeting minors who have been subject to sexual abuse by a family member. The aim of the poster series is to encourage victims to report their cases in order for the authorities to prevent it from happening again,” according to a message on the artist’s website.

The images, which depict Disney princesses such as Jasmine (Aladdin), Ariel (Little Mermaid) and Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), are jarring and disturbing, which is exactly what they’re supposed to be.

According to the text at the bottom of the poster “46 percent of minors who are raped are victims of family members. It’s never too late to report your attack.”

Saint Hoax, who describes herslf as a “pseudonymous Middle Eastern artist” on her website, told Huffington Post she was inspired to create the images when she heard a friend’s story of abuse by a family member.
