The Department of State Services (DSS) on Thursday arrested former Director-General of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, Dr Doyin Okupe, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos State.

It was learnt that Okupe was billed to board a Virgin Atlantic Airline flight from Lagos to London, United Kingdom when he was intercepted by the secret police.

Spokesman of the DSS, Dr. Peter Afunanya confirmed the arrest.

Afunanya said that Okupe “was intercepted by the DSS at Terminal 1 of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, this morning at the instance of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)”.

He added that the Labour Party chieftain has long been handed over to the commission which requested the action.

Recall that Okupe stepped down as DG of the LP presidential campaign after his December 19, 2022 conviction by a Federal High Court for violating the Money Laundering Act.

The presiding judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu sentenced him to two years in prison with an option of N500,000 fine for each of the 26 counts on which he was found guilty, amounting to N13 million.

Okupe has since been replaced as LP campaign DG by Akin Osuntokun.

While Okupe’s mission to London remains unclear, The Herald can report that the LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi is due to speak at Chatham House, London on Monday, January 16.
