In an Aim to end the protracted strike by state teachers in Edo state, the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has approved 27.5 per cent salary increase for teachers in the state, insisting that teachers who continue with the strike will not be paid.

In a meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools at the Government House in Benin, Mr. Oshiomhole said that the approval applied to teachers who heed government’s call to go back to work while negotiations continued.

He said irrespective of the challenging financial situation, the government was ready to implement the full 27.5 per cent commencing 1st July, 2013.

The governor disclosed that he had directed the Ministry of Education to discontinue the promotion assessment of the striking teachers as they could not remain at home while others worked for their promotion.

The governor said the fact that he was a unionist did not give room for union members to flaunt the laid down labour negotiation process which provides that unions call off a strike while negotiations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools has obliged the government’s request to go back to work while their NUT counterpart continue with the strike action.
