El Salvador is making a bold move to attract international expertise.

In a statement posted to X on Saturday, President Nayib Bukele announced a programme offering 5,000 “free passports” to highly skilled workers from around the globe.

This initiative targets professionals like scientists, engineers, doctors, artists, and philosophers, hoping to boost the country’s economy and intellectual capital.

President Bukele emphasised the minimal impact this programme will have on the population. The 5,000 passports represent less than 0.1% of El Salvador’s citizens.

He said these new citizens would be granted full rights, including voting privileges.

More importantly, the government aims to create a welcoming environment by offering tax and tariff exemptions for relocating families and their assets, including equipment, software, and intellectual property.

Under President Bukele’s leadership, the Central American nation has witnessed multiple radical and often controversial reforms.

This programme follows El Salvador’s recent adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender, a move met with mixed reactions.

The influx of skilled workers is expected to have a more positive and long-lasting impact.

By attracting talent and investment, El Salvador hopes to fuel innovation and economic growth.

While details regarding the application process are yet to be revealed, President Bukele’s announcement has sparked international interest. El Salvador is positioning itself as a hub for skilled professionals, offering a chance to become part of a growing and dynamic nation.
