A 35-year-old electrical engineer, Adedeji Adebesin, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding a bank of N350,000.

Adebesin, who resides at Oshodi, Lagos, is facing a charge of stealing, but he pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Josephine Ikhayere, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 11 in Ikeja.

She said that the accused entered a bank, demanded for N350,000 without having money in his account, and he was paid.

“Few seconds after the accused collected the money and left, it dawned on the cashier that he had no money in his account.

“Five days later, the accused came again demanding for N100,000, the cashier quickly alerted the police and he was arrested,” the prosecutor said.

The alleged offence contravenes Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes three years’ jail term for stealing.

Magistrate A.K. Dosunmu granted the accused N100, 000 bail with two sureties.

Dosunmu directed that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The magistrate adjourned the case until Jan. 29 for mention. (NAN)
