EV maker NIO unveils ultra luxury ET9 to rival Mercedes S Class, BMW 7 series

5 Min Read

Unveiled at an event in Xi’an, China themed, ‘A New Journey’, the Nio ET9 is a bold statement from the rising Chinese automaker. It’s not just an electric car; it’s a rolling showcase of technology and luxury, aiming to dethrone established players like the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series. Let’s dive into a full review, comparing these titans of the road across key aspects.

Design:

ET9: Nio takes a futuristic approach with a sleek, fastback silhouette and a spacious, four-seater layout. The massive panoramic roof and large wheels exude a confident presence. Some might find the front end conservative, but the overall design is undeniably unique.

S-Class: The S-Class is an icon of elegance, exuding timeless sophistication with its long, flowing lines and imposing stance. The latest model adds a touch of sportiness without sacrificing its luxurious character.

7 Series: The 7 Series strikes a balance between athleticism and luxury. Its sharp lines and aggressive grille convey a sense of power, while the spacious interior prioritizes comfort.

Interior:

ET9: The ET9’s cabin is where it truly shines. Luxurious materials like Nappa leather and walnut wood blend seamlessly with cutting-edge technology. The rear seats are the stars, offering 18-way adjustment, reclining functions, individual entertainment screens, and even a mini-fridge. The “Executive Bridge” running down the center adds a touch of exclusivity.

S-Class: The S-Class interior is a masterclass in opulent comfort. High-quality materials, meticulous attention to detail, and an abundance of space create a truly first-class experience. The latest tech features are seamlessly integrated, adding to the sense of sophistication.

7 Series: The 7 Series interior balances luxury with functionality. The spacious cabin offers ample legroom and headroom, while the high-quality materials and intuitive tech interface create a comfortable and productive environment.

Technology:

ET9: The ET9 boasts a wealth of cutting-edge tech, including a 900-volt electric architecture, a proprietary silicon carbide power module, and Nio’s own NX9031 AD chip. This translates to 600kW fast charging, Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities, and a host of AI-powered features that elevate the driving experience.

S-Class: The S-Class is no slouch in the tech department either. It features a suite of driver assistance systems, a massive OLED infotainment display, and an augmented reality head-up display. However, it doesn’t quite match the ET9’s level of cutting-edge innovation.

7 Series: The 7 Series offers a comprehensive tech package, including gesture control, a panoramic digital instrument cluster, and advanced driver assistance systems. However, it lacks the futuristic edge of the ET9 and the brand recognition of the S-Class.

Performance:

ET9: With 697 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds, the ET9 is no slouch. The advanced suspension system ensures a smooth and comfortable ride, even on rough roads. However, its handling might not be as engaging as the sportier options from its rivals.

S-Class: The S-Class offers a range of engine options, each delivering exhilarating performance. The top-of-the-line AMG models provide a thrilling driving experience, while the hybrid options offer impressive fuel efficiency.

7 Series: The 7 Series also boasts a range of powerful engines, with the M760i xDrive offering a particularly exciting drive. The handling is sharp and responsive, making it a joy to navigate twisty roads.

Verdict:

The Nio ET9 is a game-changer in the luxury EV market. It offers a unique blend of cutting-edge technology, opulent comfort, and impressive performance. While it might not have the brand recognition of the S-Class or the driving dynamics of the 7 Series, its futuristic approach and focus on in-car experience make it a compelling alternative for tech-savvy luxury car buyers. Ultimately, the choice comes down to individual priorities. If you value cutting-edge tech and a spacious, tech-laden cabin, the ET9 is a strong contender. If brand legacy and driving dynamics are your priorities, the S-Class or 7 Series
