Former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has blasted President Muhammadu Buhari for the announcement of June 12 as new Democracy Day and honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR) to the winner of the election, Chief MKO Abiola.

Buhari made the announcement on Wednesday in a statement he personally signed.

Abiola’s running mate, Babagana Kingibe and late foremost freedom fighter, Chief Gani Fawehinmi were also awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, the nation’s second highest honour.

Fani-Kayode, a fiery critic of the Buhari administration, accused the president of having an ulterior motive in granting the recognition a year before the 2019 general election.

He said, “The award of GCFR to MKO Abiola by @MBuhari and the declaration of June 12th as Democracy Day is a classic case of a cunning, self-seeking, self-serving and evil man doing the RIGHT thing for the WRONG reasons. If you really want to win our hearts beg for forgiveness and resign!”
