Former Minister of Culture, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has reacted angrily after Agbani Darego was described as the “ugliest Miss World ever”.
Google had listed the 38, who won the Miss World pageant in 2001, as the ugliest in the history of the pageant which started in 1951.
Nigerians had gone up in arms Saturday morning after a Google search of “who is the ugliest Miss World” returned a photo of Darego with the description: “Chief Agbani Darego, MFR (born Agbani Darego, 22 December 1982) is a Nigerian model and beauty queen who was crowned Miss World in 2001. She was the first indigenous African to win Miss World.”
Reacting, Fani-Kayode said, “The assertion that Agbani Darego is the “ugliest Miss World ever” is false.
“It is also deeply insulting to Nigeria, Africa and all people of color and it is utterly racist.
“Agbani remains one of the most beautiful women in the world and I am proud of the fact that she is a Nigerian.
“Whether it is Miss World, Miss United Nations or Miss Universe, Africa has always produced winners and the most beautiful women in the world.
“No-one can take that away from us.”
