A man parading himself as a DSS operative has been arrested by the Bayelsa State Command of the Department of State Services.

The 42-year-old suspect, identified as Emmanuel Udo Akpan, was said to have used his assumed status to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

Akpan is a dismissed police officer, who was sent packing from the force in 2013 and has been wanted by the police in connection with allegations of impersonation and extortion, the DSS averred.

He allegedly duped unsuspecting members of the public under the pretext of helping them get recruited into the police force.

The Director of the Bayelsa State Command of the DSS, Ade Olusesan, who confirmed the arrest said that Akpan was picked up on a tip-off and “incriminating items” were found on him.

He listed the items as: police (SARS) case file, police visitor identification tag, judiciary file, a stapler Akpan said he used as a gun at night to scare victims into submission, Bayelsa State government file, and so on.

The suspect pleaded with the service to be lenient with him, claiming that he posed as an operative of the DSS because of his dismissal by the police.

According to him, the need to cater for his wife and five children pushed him into the act.

The father of five said that if pardoned, he would mend his ways and never pose as an agent of any security agency again.

The DSS said that the suspect would be handed over to the police for investigation and prosecution
