A human rights activist, Mrs Stella Ogbonna ,has urged Nigerians to support the fight against corruption by President Muhammadu Buhari to reposition the country.

Ogbonna told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Nsukka, Enugu State on Tuesday that since corruption was responsible for the poor economy, poverty and unemployment in the land.

She said that Buhari could not do it alone and would not be everywhere to carry out the war against bribery and corruption.

“Ministers and heads of government offices should assist the president in sanitising their various ministries, agencies and establishments to move the county forward.

“Buhari will not be in Aso Rock and at the same time be in ministries, agencies and private establishments. It is the duty of those at the helm of affairs of these places to ensure accountability and transparency.

“Nigerians should not see the anti-corruption war as a sole responsibility of Mr President but joint project to move the country to the next level,’’ she said.

Ogbonna urged those in authority to shun bribery, corruption and embezzlement of public funds to reduce poverty and unemployment.

“It is when a country is devoid of corruption that it will attract foreign investors and have good image before the international community,” she said.

The activist commended the government for removing petrol subsidy and opening up the downstream sector, saying that with time what happened in the communication industry would also happened in the sector.

“Though Nigerians feel the pain now, with time competition will stabilise the price of petrol. The government should put adequate palliative measures to cushion the effect of subsidy removal.

On the 2016 budget, the activist urged the president and National Assembly members to ensure effective implementation of the budget to reduce the people’s suffering.

“The president should ensure that his ministers give monthly account of budget implementation based on the money released to them.

“Federal legislators on their own part should ensure strict and effective implementation of the budget through over-sight functions.

“The effective implementation of the budget will help to stimulate the various sectors of the economy as well as move it forward,’’ she said. (NAN)
