At least 1,500 inmates have been reported freed when unknown gunmen invaded Owerri Correctional Prison in Imo State on Monday morning.

Reports say that the attack occurred between 1 am and 3 am.

The attackers were said to have also set the Imo State Police Command headquarters ablaze and freed an unconfirmed number of suspects at the State Criminal Investigation Department.

Breaking into the prison facility with explosives, the attackers reportedly told the inmates: “Go home, Jesus has risen. You have no reason to be here.”

The state police command has yet to comment on the attack.
