House Of Reps In Rowdy Session Over Member’s Defection

House of Representatives members elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have engaged in a protest on the floor of the House over the defection of Mr Raphael Igbokwe to the All Progressives Congress.

Igbokwe, from Imo State, was elected on the platform of the PDP in 2011 but announced his defection to the ruling APC on the floor today.

The members had commenced the protest after Speaker Yakubu Dogara allowed the defection despite a law stating that any member decamping to another party stands to lose their seat in the House unless he or she can prove there is a crisis in the party prompting a move.

The members also staged a walkout in protest.

The members had drawn attention to a recent Supreme Court judgment on defection of legislators.

According to The Punch, Igbokwe, who said he defected back in January when there was as crisis in the PDP.
