The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says there is no truth behind reports that it operates polling units in Niger Republic.

Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi made the clarification in apparent reaction to insinuations on social media that the commission has been registering voters in neighbouring countries.

In a post on social media, a user,  Uche Nwabuike alleged that INEC was operating some illegal registration centres outside Nigeria.

But speaking on a Twitter space on Permanent Voters Card (PVC) organised by The ICIR, Oyekanmi said the allegation was untrue.

According to him, “By virtue of the provisions of the Constitution, all elections must take place in Nigeria. And to that extent, we cannot register voters or conduct elections in Nigeria.

“This is why Nigerians in the Diaspora cannot vote from abroad.”
