The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has said that many of the corrupt personnel are not bothered about the image or ethics of the Nigeria Police Force.

He described the situation as “shameful and unfortunate”.

Adejobi said this in an X post on Tuesday, after he disclosed that he caught some police officers extorting motorists.

“I personally caught some policemen yesterday while driving along Lagos/Ibadan Expressway. The DPO has been asked to bring them to Abuja. Then we know what to do.

“It’s disheartening to see some of our men extorting Nigerians. Personally, I feel sad, and I don’t like it because it’s a sort of oppression,” he said.

Adejobi reiterated that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has made it clear that supervisory officers would henceforth be held responsible.

“The IGP has also directed senior officers to rebuke and confront any of our men who misbehave irrespective of his jurisdiction.

“Every officer has the right and power to punish any erring personnel anywhere in Nigeria. We can not continue to overlook their misdeeds. This is the sacrifice and the bold step we must take,” he said.

A netizen, @kenny_Aj_ called on the police authorities to educate their men on the adverse effect of extortion on the image of the force.

Reacting, Adejobi said, ‘Unfortunately, many of the corrupt personnel are not bothered about the image or ethics of the NPF, and it’s so shameful and unfortunate.

“The top hierarchy of the Force works hard to sanitise and change the face of the force, but some of the bad ones would never allow any change.

“The same thing is applicable to our general system in the country. Many unpatriotic elements and deviants draw us back. It’s a pity.

“Many who do that lack the idea of both immediate and futuristic consequences of what they do to themselves and the country at large.

“We need to change for good to have our deserved country,” the FPRO said.
