The recent controversy surrounding Wizkid’s comments on Afrobeats has sparked debate within the Nigerian music industry. However, fellow singer Joeboy has come to Wizkid’s defense, claiming his words were misinterpreted.
Earlier this month, Wizkid faced criticism after seemingly distancing himself from the Afrobeats label on social media. He expressed a desire to create music beyond the genre’s confines.
In an interview on Lagos radio station Cool FM, Joeboy weighed in on the issue. He believes Wizkid’s statement was misconstrued, emphasizing that the Grammy winner isn’t abandoning Afrobeats entirely.
“Wizkid’s identity is Afrobeats, just like mine,” Joeboy said. “But we’re also artists who can explore different sounds. We shouldn’t be limited to one genre.”
Joeboy’s comments offer a new perspective on the situation, suggesting Wizkid might be advocating for a broader artistic identity for Afrobeats artists, allowing them to experiment without genre limitations.
