In a thought-provoking interview with Chude Jideonwo, renowned dancer Kaffy expressed her belief that aspiring married couples should undergo mental health evaluations, couples therapy, and drug tests as mandatory requirements. She passionately argued that the significance of a marriage goes far beyond the individual couple involved, as it is within the institution of marriage that society itself is built. Kaffy emphasized the need for a comprehensive, year-long program focusing on human behavioral sciences that prospective couples should be required to complete before getting married.
Drawing a comparison to the process of obtaining a driver’s license, Kaffy pointed out that acquiring a license to operate a vehicle is often more challenging than obtaining a marriage certificate. She highlighted the paradox of a society that places greater emphasis on ensuring individuals are capable of driving safely than on equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills for building and maintaining healthy marriages.
Reflecting on her own experience, Kaffy candidly discussed the failure of her marriage to Joseph Ameh, attributing it to a lack of education and preparation. She suggested that many people, herself included, enter into marriage without being adequately educated on the complexities and challenges it entails. Kaffy emphasized that relying solely on the perspectives and experiences of one’s parents is insufficient and called for a broader understanding of marriage through formal education.
“It’s now so easy to get into marriage that’s why it keeps crashing,” Kaffy disclosed, highlighting the underlying issue of people entering into marriages without the necessary preparation or understanding of what it truly entails. She expressed her belief that parents should play an active role in educating their children about marriage, beyond the traditional viewpoints passed down through generations.
