Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged all Nigerians in all zones to keep faith with PDP.

He made the appeal in apparent reaction to reported plots by Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State and other South-East governors to defect to the APC.

Umahi last week invited the National Working Committee (NWC) of PDP to a meeting in Abuja where he formally revealed his intention.

Stating that his mind was made up, the Ebonyi governor was said to have told the PDP leaders that APC would protect the interest of the South-East geopolitical zone in 2023.

He was further quoted to have said that the APC was planning to zone the 2023 presidency to the South-East.

Although the PDP leaders tried to dissuade him, Umahi stuck to his gun, insisting that he would only rescind his decision to leave the PDP if the party could make a pronouncement saying it would zone its 2023 presidential ticket to the South-East.

Former Aviation Minister and PDP chieftain, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode warned a day later that other South-East governors could follow Umahi, who is the Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum, out of the party.

Atiku, who was PDP’s presidential candidate in 2019, is believed to be eyeing the presidential ticket of the party in 2023.

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Atiku appealed to all to keep the faith with PDP, describing the party as the “best friend Nigeria could have”.

He wrote, “The Peoples Democratic Party is the best friend Nigeria could have.

“All geopolitical zones deserve a political party that believes in Nigeria and not a party that believes otherwise.

The @OfficialPDPNig has much to offer all parts of Nigeria, and I urge all Nigerians in all zones to keep faith with a party that has kept faith with Nigeria and will be equitable to all.”
