Former National Legal Adviser of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Muiz Banire, says many of the products of tertiary institutions in Nigeria are a danger to society.

Banire, who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), said this in a series of tweets over the weekend.

According to the lawyer-turned-politician, this is due to the lack of funding, death of qualified academic personnel and proliferation of tertiary institutions in the country.

Banire said, “Today, I am revisiting a subject that I believe the government, particularly the federal government, needs to urgently revisit.

“This is the issue relating to the proliferation of tertiary institutions. I have, in the past, under the Buhari administration made a couple of interventions which expectedly fell on deaf ears.

“Today, I am simply saying that the government needs to urgently audit and rationalize the number of tertiary institutions, particularly those owned by the governments at all levels.

“This is primarily necessary to improve the quality of the products from the institution. There is no doubt that most of the institutions are unleashing dangers on the society.

“This is inevitable, not only due to the lack of funding but dearth of qualified academic personnel. I have no doubt in my mind that the number of the tertiary institutions in the country far surpasses the number of qualified academic personnel.

“Consequently, a lot of quacks have found their way into the institutions, garbaging rubbish into the brains of the students. Beyond this, the government needs to audit the actual needs of the country in terms of discipline.

“I suspect that the areas of need today is technology and medical sciences rather than arts, social sciences and law that most of the institutions are ‘baking’ and releasing into the society. There is urgent need for the merger of the institutions.

“It will be recalled that during the Buhari regime, establishment of most of the institutions were simply political. This is my urgent call today.”
