The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) says it has begun disconnecting electricity to the Niger State Government House, Minna, the state secretariat housing ministries, departments, and agencies of the state government, and the General Hospital, Minna over N1.3 billion debt.
Sunday Tribune quoted AEDC Public Relations Officer in the state, Adamu Dantani, as confirming the development on Friday.
Dantani disclosed that the AEDC Board had last Wednesday set up a task force to embark on disconnections of public institutions including the Government House, Minna and hospitals, including private organisations and private individuals resident in Minna and its environs.

The task force, it said, was also tasked with the responsibility of recovering some of the billions owed the company by customers in the state.
He said that the state government was given a seven-day ultimatum to offset its debts but failed to do so.
The AEDC spokesman revealed that the State House of Assembly had four months ago waded into the company’s disagreement with the state government over the debt and an agreement was reached for the executive arm to pay 80 percent of the debt.
Dantani said that the state government still failed to abide by the agreement.
“Till date, there is no commitment from the state government.
“We took the action after being pushed to the wall by the state government for not keeping its word after the intervention of the State Assembly four months ago,” he said.
He revealed that the state government has been paying N74 million monthly of its current bills but the N1.3 billion was outstanding bills that accumulated before now.
