The Wise Administration of Terrestrial Environment and Resources (WATER), a NGO, has urged the Federal Government to adopt the ‘’Green Economy’’ theory to enhance the environment for economic growth and development.

Mr Bassey Ating, the Programme Coordinator, WATER, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Friday.

The green economy, Ating said, required green energy generation based on renewable energy to replace other forms of energy that are not friendly to the environment.

“The green initiative is aimed at reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities for sustainable development without degrading the environment.

“Its adoption will enhance environment for economic growth and development in the country.

“The application of green economy theory reduces so many global crisis associated with climate change, food security and energy,’’ he said.

According to the programme coordinator, the concept if applied can serve as a mechanism to revamp the adverse effects of the destroyed environment on the ecological system.

While advising Nigeria to adopt the green theory, Ating said many nations had taken a closer look at the concept as an alternative means to refurbish the destroyed environment for sustainable development.

“The green economy theory is to encourage nations to try to utilise their resources in a more resourceful manner such that you can get a lot of output in energy resources.

“I am optimistic that the adoption of the green economy theory will enhance environment for economic growth and development in Nigeria,’’ the WATER official said.
