One shot dead as masquerade attacks mosque in Osogbo

An attack by a masquerade and its followers on a mosque in Osogbo, Osun State has left one person dead and nine others injured.

The dead victim, identified as Moshood Salawudeen, was said to be among Muslim faithful worshipping in front of the mosque located in Oluode Aranyin’s compound when the attack took place on Sunday.

The masquerade and its entourage were said to have passed beside the mosque a first time without creating a scene.

It was learnt that four policemen were among the masquerade’s entourage.

On their return, they allegedly attacked the mosque, damaging its doors and windows.

This was said to have caused the Muslim faithful to challenge them, which resulting in the fracas.

The Chief Imam of the mosque, Alhaji Quoseem Yunus said that the attack on the mosque was shocking because there was no previous disagreement between the two parties.

He explained that the Muslim faithful were in the front of the mosque observing special prayers when the masquerade and its entourage appeared.

“Four policemen were with them,” Yunus said on Monday.

“They passed us by and moved down. They later returned to where we all sat and started pelting us with stones. They later shot at us and used machete on us. One person was killed. We have taken the corpse to UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital Morgue. Nine others are receiving treatment in other hospitals in Osogbo.”

The Osun State Police Command has yet to confirm the attack.
