The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) should tackle the problem of radicalisation and terrorism, Austrian Foreign Minister, Sebastian Kurz, said on Thursday in Vienna.
Kurz presented his agenda for 2017, when Austria will take over the rotating OSCE chairmanship from Germany.
“The OSCE should not only focus on ending conflicts in Ukraine and elsewhere, but should also deal with the threat posed by radicals who return after having gone to fight in Syria or Iraq.
“It’s our task to fight terrorism not only with armies and police, but to take preventive measures.
“For example, Austria plans a regional OSCE workshops with young people to counter radical messages by those who recruit fighters for the Islamic State extremist group.
“More than 10,000 people from the 57 OSCE countries have gone to fight in Iraq or Syria,’’ Kurz said.
