PDP Summons Senators As Plot To Oust Saraki, Ekweremadu Thickens

Following alleged moves by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to oust Senate President Bukola Saraki and his Deputy Ike Ekweremadu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has summoned all senators under the party’s platform to Abuja.

The summon was sent through WhatsApp by a party leader on Wednesday, Daily Sun reported.

It was gathered that some of the senators had gone to their villages.

The move to impeach Saraki is said to have begun after APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole said on Wednesday that it is “a matter of honour for Saraki to leave the crown (senate presidency) in the house that the crown belongs to.”

Some members of the PDP caucus in the House of Representatives had on Wednesday also raised the alarm about a plot by some APC senators to break into the National Assembly complex, steal the mace and install Saraki’s replacement.

However, the PDP and the party’s senate caucus has summoned the senators in a move geared towards rallying support for Saraki and Ekweremadu.

The senators were said to be expected in Abuja before Saturday night, when an elaborate meeting will be held with the party leadership to checkmate the APC’s clandestine moves to impeach the senate president and his deputy.

The PDP caucus in the House of Representatives had kept a vigil right in front of the senate chamber in the National Assembly Complex to prevent APC senators from reopening the complex to impeach Saraki, who decamped from APC to PDP on Tuesday, and Ekweremadu.

Deputy Minority Leader in the House, Chukwuka Onyema, had told reporters that they heard of a plot by the APC senators to clandestinely remove Saraki and Ekweremadu from office on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning while aided by security agencies.

But speaking on the alleged impeachment plot, Sen. Clifford Ordia (PDP – Edo Central) said, “Saraki cannot be impeached. Those planning to remove him through the back door will fail. We will not allow it to happen. They have no right to reopen the National Assembly and they know it.”

It remains to be seen where this plots and counter-plots will end as the 2019 general election gradually draws nearer.
