A Nigeria-born academic, Prof. David Mba, has emerged the Vice-Chancellor of Birmingham City University (BCU), a public university in the United Kingdom.

He will assume his new role on October 1, 2023, replacing Professor Philip Plowden, who is retiring after six years.

Before his appointment at BCU, Mba was Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise, University of the Arts London (UAL).

Reacting to the appointment in a Saturday tweet, presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi said, “I most heartily congratulate Professor David Mba, a Nigerian who was recently appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Birmingham City University, where he is expected to assume office in October.

“Over the years, Prof Mba has remained active in the academic sector of the United Kingdom, where he served in major roles in different major institutions.

“Prof Mba’s journey to greatness reminds us of the great intellectual potential that Nigerians are endowed with and why we must pay more attention to and invest more in our educational sector.

“The good education Prof Mba received at various stages of his life placed him on the global stage.

“No nation raises great and responsible citizens without education. I wish Prof David Mba well in his new position and urge him to seek ways of contributing to the development of our dear nation, Nigeria, as we struggle to build the New Nigeria of our dreams.”
