Does this sound impossible to you? Well, it shouldn’t be, because it has just happened in the United States.
A 54-year-old woman, Tracey Thompson, has given birth to her own grandchild, after acting as a surrogate for her own daughter, 28-year-old Kelley McKissack.
Kelley, and her husband Aaron McKissack, of Wyllie, Texas, had undergone several infertility treatments since they got married, only to suffer three miscarriages, doctors at the Medical Centre of Plano, where the delivery took place, told AP.
Kelley’s mom then offered to assist her daughter carry the pregnancy, as a result of which she gave birth to a baby girl weighing 6 pounds, 11 ounces.
A statement by the hospital which was released on Thursday, said that the couple had only four fertilised embryos left and despite being seven years past menopause, Ms Thompson offered to act as a surrogate.
The statement added that the embryos were implanted in Thompson’s womb in April 2015.
The couple have gone ahead to name the child Kelcey, which is a combination of Kelley and Tracey, her mother’s and grandmother’s first names.
“It is such a blessing that I can do this for my daughter,” Thompson said.
And Kelley said of her mom’s sacrifice: “No one could give someone a greater gift.”
