A video had gone viral on social media showing a lady being severely assaulted by a crowd. She was beaten, stripped naked and had her hair shaved in public because she stole a tin of milk from the supermarket owned by the pharmacist.

The Delta State chapter of the Association of Women Journalists condemned the assault on the young woman and described it as unfortunate, barbaric and cruel.

The association said the recent hardships caused by COVID-19 could have necessitated the action on the part of the young woman.

It said while it did not condone the act of stealing, the woman should have been handed over to the Police by the pharmacist rather than face mob action.

According to an NGO, Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation which took up the matter and facilitated the arrest, the young woman in question lied that she stole the milk for her child. It was discovered however that she was a kleptomaniac who had no child.

It was also discovered that she has a history of stealing small, insignificant items.
