Police Brutalize Ambrose Ali University Law Professor

A Professor of Law, Professor Sunday Edeko was reportedly brutalized by rogue police squad in Edo state.

The men of the rogue squad were reported to have used cutlasses, hammers and teargas on the University lecturer for daring to ask questions.

The incident reportedly happened in the morning of March 13, 2017 which led to the brutalisation of the university lecturer for about six hours.

The University lecturer who was reported to have ended up in the hospital after the attack was said to have seen a young boy identified as a relative of the former speaker, Edo state House of Assembly, Thomas Okun in a parked police van.

The professor upon sighting the young boy reportedly slowed down to ask questions about the boy’s presence in the police van which led to his alleged brutalization.

The policemen who claimed to be directly from the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Haliru Ugwandu’s office claimed they were acting on the commissioner’s orders.

Prof. Edeko who narrated his ordeal to THISDAY said one of the policemen who was on mufti told him to go awat and “without even giving me time to move or offer an explanation, he used a hammer to hit my right hand.”

He added: “That was their first assault against me. I managed to park the car some metres away and alighted from the car. At that point, about 5 armed men who were not in police uniform advanced towards me. I clearly introduced myself.

“All my attempts to explain that I am a law-abiding community leader fell on deaf ears. They started the second stage of their assault on me. They descended on me with hammers, cutlasses, tear gas, hand and foot. They brutalised me and inflicted injuries on my back, hand and leg.”

Prof. Edeko said the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Nigerian Bar Association have taken actions regarding the assault by the rogue policemen.

He further added that he has petitioned the Zone 5 Police Headquarters and called on the president and Inspector General of Police along with the Polce Service Commission to help him fight fo0r justice.
