The Lagos State Police Command on Saturday morning disrupted June 12 protest at the popular Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota by firing teargas at protesters.

The men of the command, who barricaded the park, equally shot into the air to scare off the protesters, TheCable reported.

Three Toyota Hilux vehicles and two armoured tanks were reportedly strategically placed by the security agents at the venue of the protest.

It was learnt that protesters scampered for safety at the sound of the gunshots and firing of tear gas canisters.

Nigerians across different cities home and abroad are organising protests against bad governance, poverty, high rate of unemployment, insecurity and killings, and #TwitterBan.

However, the Lagos state command in a Friday statement said it was not aware of any planned protest for June 12 in the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Muyiwa Adejobi, urged residents to go about their normal activities.

“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to state clearly that it is not aware of any planned protest in Lagos State to commemorate the 2021 Democracy Day on Saturday, 12th June, 2021,” Adejobi’s statement read in part.

He added that there was no “sit-at-home” order in the state, urging the public to disregard a rumour in the public space that people should stay at home on Democracy Day
