Police Officer Demoted After Fracturing Surgeon’s Hand to Enforce Lockdown

Akwa Ibom Police Command has demoted an Officer from the rank of a Sergeant to a Corporal for assaulting a Surgeon while enforcing the COVID-19 Lockdown.

Akwa Ibom state Governor who declared a total lockdown in the state exempted health care workers from the order.This is to enable them perform their duties amid the COVID-19 Pandemic.

However, an overzealous officer, Sergeant Edidiong Alexander accosted and assaulted Dr. Daniel Edet who was on his way to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital on the fateful Friday evening.

Infuriated by the assault on their colleague, members of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) threatened to embark on a strike if no disciplinary measure was taken on the Officer. The assault left Dr. Edet’s hand fractured.

This caused the Akwa-Ibom Police Command to launch an investigation into the allegation.

Findings revealed Sergeant Edidiong was guilty which led to his prompt demotion to the rank of a Corporal.

Meanwhile, Imohimi Edgal, State Commissioner of police tendered an apology to the assaulted Surgeon and his colleagues over the misconduct of the Officer.
