The Kano wing of Poultry Farmers Association of Nigeria (PAN) has raised alarm on the rate of spread of avian influenza virus in the state as the number of affected farms keeps increasing.

According to Assistant Secretary, Umar Usman Kibiya, poultry farmers in the state are facing a great threat of extinction from the business, as according to him, affected farmers have lost over N500 million in just two months, a situation he described as a huge disaster for the business.

He added that the rate at which the flu is spreading has generated a lot of fear and concern and yet farmers in the state have virtually no support from the state government.

Kibya said what stated in three local government areas has now reached 11, affecting over 57 farms.

Since the disease resurfaced in December 2015, over 300,000 birds have been depopulated in the affected farms, he said.
