1 Min Read

A man was lucky to escape with his life in Wednesday’s mass shooting at the San Bernadino Inland Regional Centre after his iPhone deflected a bullet that was aimed at his chest.

The shooting which was carried out by a Saudi Muslim couple, Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, left 14 people dead and 21 others injured.

The man, 24-year-old Kevin Ortiz, was shot five times including two shots to the thigh and one each to the arm and shoulder.

However, he was lucky as the fifth bullet that would have snuffed the life out of him as he hid under a table – aimed at the chest – was deflected by his iPhone tucked into his shirt pocket.

According to the Daily Mail, Ortiz is still in hospital and his mother expects him to pull through.

This latest shooting has raised more concerns and calls for stricter gun-control legislation in the United States.

San Bernadino is a city of over 200,000 inhabitants in the state of California.
