Senate Directs Customs To Recover N30 Billion Import Waivers

The Senate has directed the Nigerian Customs Service to recover the thirty billion naira which the country had lost to the waivers granted by the Ministry of Finance during the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan, to some business firms to import rice, turkey and palm oil into the country.

Speaking after the close-door meeting, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who made the resolutions at the meeting known to journalists, said they agreed at the meeting that Customs should recover the N30 billion post to waivers granted to importers of rice, palm oil, turkey and chickens.

He regretted that the goods on which the waivers were granted are items that Nigeria can be self-sufficient in local production, adding that the Senate was ready to make legislations to enable the CBN and other stakeholders to rebuild the nation’s economy.

He emphasised that the money must be paid back to the federal government, adding that the Nigerian customs service would be invited by the time the Senate resumes to enable both institutions rob mind and review areas that need to be strengthened to make the agency more efficient.
