Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged the Federal Government to step up security and intelligence gathering to forestall incessant terrorist attacks in the Northeast.
Atiku stated this on Wednesday evening while reacting to brutal attacks on Faduma Kolomdi, a community in Gubio LGA of Borno State, and Faskari LGA of Katsina State.
On the Borno attacks by terrorists, residents told Governor Babagana Zulum that the assailants preached to villagers before killing at least 81, mostly women and children.
In what appeared to be coordinated attacks, bandits raided five villages in Faskari LGA in Katsina and killed at least 40 persons.
The 2019 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said that the states and regions should also make security arrangements that suit their local needs instead of relying solely on the centre to protect their people.
In the message he personally signed, Atiku said, “I am saddened by the despicable massacre of innocent Nigerians in Faduma Kolomdi in Borno state.
“There’s a compelling need to step up security and intelligence in the Northeast which is still an endemic region of terrorism.
“My deepest condolences to the families of the dead.
“Also, the killing of yet more persons by bandits in Faskari LGA of Katsina State brings to the fore the need for states and regions to have a security arrangement that suits their local needs. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost loved ones.
