Stop accusing Buhari of disobeying court orders over Sowore’s detention- Sagay

Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay, has called on Nigerians to stop accusing the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration of disobeying court orders.

Sagay who made this call on Thursday, November 21,  in Abuja  after a round table discussion on a proposed bill on the Jury Service Act said rather than seek facts, Nigerians always jumped to negative conclusion whenever a judgment was passed and the accused was not released.

According to him, “In the case of Sowore, I think somebody should go and interview the DSS and find out why, instead of jumping to conclusions which are usually negative conclusions.”

Executive Secretary, PACAC, Prof. Sadiq Radda, said to fight corruption and ensure a sane society, all hands must be on deck hence. The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, represented by Christian Irabor from Office of the AGF, said the Federal Government had insisted that integrity is an important criterion for public office holders.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Anti-corruption and Financial Crimes, Senator Suleiman Kwari, said establishing the jury court would help the present administration in its fight against corruption and other criminal offences.

Earlier, The Herald reported that Femi Falana, the lead counsel of #RevolutionNow Convener Omoyele Sowore,  declared that the  Department of State Services (DSS) was not  authorized to verify the online publisher’s sureties.

The Herald gathered that Sowore has been in detention since August 3 when he was arrested on the eve of his planned nationwide protest.

A federal high court in Abuja granted him bail, but the DSS has refused to release him. The secret police said it would not release him until the identities of those who stood as sureties for him are verified.

Falana in a statement said: “Pursuant to the verification of the sureties of Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare  by the Federal High Court,  the trial judge, the Honourable Justice Ifeoma Ojukwu made an order on November 6, 2019  for the release of the defendants from the custody of the DSS.

“The Court Order has not authorised the DSS to approve the sureties before releasing Sowore and Bakare from custody.”
