Davis told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Ilorin that it was necessary for parents to train the children properly since they now spend most of their time at home.

She said parents should not over pamper their wards owing to the lockdown, adding that overfeeding is also not good for their health.

“These days, I see a lot of children play till evening time, I begin to wonder if they have anytime for reading or study.

“Parents should be more sensitive to their children, do not say I can’t keep them at home for too long, they need monitoring.

“Children tend to lose some disciplines especially now that they are not in school. It is the responsibility of parents to stand in the place for teachers.

“Create time for your children. Don’t be too busy not to train your children properly. It is your responsibility as a parent to guide them,” she urged.

On how best to handle home schooling and virtual learning by parents during lockdown, Davis said that it was an opportunity for parents to observe their children’s weaknesses and correct them or guide them toward success in their academics.

“It is important to do the online learning with them. Don’t think since the television or computer is on and the lecture is on, you can leave them by themselves, they will wander away. They need special attention.

“But with your presence, they tend to be more attentive and they may even want to tell you something about their teacher.

“Go through their homeworks with them and ensure they do it well and don’t forget some little etiquettes and courtesy which we call home training.

“Respect for adults especially their teachers, respect for their friends and mates, and care for their younger ones.

“With these, by the time schools reopen, we will not have to start from the scratch, and we will be able to cover up for lost days,” she said.
