Former Kaduna Senator Shehu Sani has called on President Bola Tinubu-led government to condemn recent attacks on civilians in Israel.

The Herald reports that Mr Sani, in a tweet on Saturday, also urged President Tinubu-led government to unambiguously demand an end to the occupation of Palestinian lands.

“Nigeria should issue a categorical statement condemning the cruel terror attacks on civilian targets inside Israel and unambiguously demand for an end to the occupation of Palestinian lands & the immediate realization of the Palestinian state. We should call for peace based on the two-state solution formula,” Mr Sani wrote.
Mr Sani’s comment comes in the wake of recent attacks on Isreal by Islamic sect, Hamas.

In a significant escalation of hostilities, the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas launched a major attack on Israel on Saturday, resulting in a tragic loss of life and numerous injuries. This surprise assault involved a combination of armed militants infiltrating Israel’s territory and a relentless barrage of rocket attacks originating from Gaza.

Israeli authorities have attributed this aggressive move to the Iran-backed Hamas, suggesting that the group has essentially declared war. The Israeli military confirmed engagements with militants in various Israeli towns and military installations close to the Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his determination to respond to these actions, stating, “Our adversary will face consequences of an unprecedented nature. We are engaged in a conflict, and we are committed to emerging victorious.”

The toll from the Hamas attack has been devastating, with Israel’s ambulance service reporting a minimum of 40 fatalities and hundreds of individuals suffering injuries. Unfortunately, these numbers are expected to rise. Witnesses on the ground in the southern town of Sderot, Israel, described a harrowing scene, where multiple bodies were seen in the streets.

In response to the aggression, the Israeli military has initiated airstrikes targeting locations within Gaza. Witnesses in Gaza have reported hearing powerful explosions, and hospitals are dealing with an influx of casualties, including both the deceased and the wounded. The situation remains highly volatile, with both sides engaged in ongoing hostilities, raising concerns about further escalation in the region.
